Get to know Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a unique Scandinavian city that is characterised by its canals, cobbled streets, cycling culture, strong economy, and happy locals.
In fact, thanks to shorter average workdays, more vacation days, high levels of personal interaction, and free college tuition (for students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland), it has been ranked as one of the happiest cities in the world.
Copenhagen is also famed for its high quality of life, stunning scenery, progressive politics, and for being a frontrunner in sustainability and eco-friendliness.
With that said, it is easy to understand why this beautiful Northern European city’s popularity has been stretching to every corner of the globe for years. With a large number of tourists visiting every year, Copenhagen is also a very popular study destination.
The city by the sea mixes high safety levels and sustainable living, with stunning modern architecture, royal history, a mouth-watering restaurant scene, great shopping, and loads of culture.
Copenhagen’s culture and creativity
Copenhagen manages to pack a whole lot of culture into a relatively small space. The city’s charming, cobbled streets have an impressive selection of contemporary and historic art centres, museums, galleries, theatres, parks, and waterways.
Enjoy world-famous artists from all over the world and street fashion in the hip Nørrebro district where monochromic layers, block-coloured bikes and stripped-back sophistication are the standard.
World-class architecture
Considered the world capital of architecture, some of Copenhagen’s iconic buildings are a sight to behold. Danish design is known to be simplistic and functional, but Copenhagen’s architecture is a perfect infusion of cutting-edge design and practical functionality.
Filled with many incredible examples of Neoclassical Architecture including the stunning and unique Bølgen (The Wave), the modern arched glass façade of the massive Copenhagen Opera House is perhaps the city’s most iconic building.
Copenhagen also blends fascinating modern architecture with historical artefacts. Once a Viking fishing settlement, walking Copenhagen’s narrow streets, you can still find traces of the Viking history. Visit museums dedicated to the notorious raiders, explore the remains of Roskilde Domkirke, a 1,000-year-old castle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the iconic 17th-century Round Tower observatory.
For its distinct architectural landscape and strong legacy in innovative urban development, along with its high ambitions for climate, sustainability solutions, and liveability, Copenhagen was officially designated World Capital of Architecture in 2023 by UNESCO-UIA (International Union of Architects).
Unique neighbourhoods
When exploring Copenhagen, make sure to visit its unique neighbourhoods. Each has its own distinct vibe and appearance. From gritty and industrial Refshaleøen, to the posh Frederiksberg and the world-famous freetown of Christiania, embed yourself in one of these communities and feel a sense of localhood. They all have something different to offer.
Student life in Copenhagen

A Copenhagen Card provides access to more than 80 of them, most within walking distance of the centre.
The list of cultural and fun experiences in the city centre is quite long.
