Getting to know Málaga

Málaga is a municipality of Spain located in the southern autonomous community of Andalusia. With a population of around 600,000 inhabitants, it is the 5th largest city in Spain.

With high-rise hotels and resorts protruding up from beautiful sun-kissed yellow-sand beaches, Málaga is both a modern business centre of the south and a typical relaxed Andalusian city.

Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Málaga is best known internationally for its attractive beaches, almost year-round sunny weather, and as the birthplace of its favourite son Pablo Picasso. It’s a place where you can enjoy big-city life with a laid-back charm.

But Málaga, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe, was not always the city of culture and food, brimming with youthful vigour that it is now.

Spectacular transformation

Not too long ago, Málaga was mostly a scruffy seaport that tourists avoided. Today, the port city has been transformed into a charming hotspot for foreigners and locals alike.

Clean and bright, with a pedestrian-only city centre and a revamped harbour area that is a joy to stroll, Málaga is now cheerful and vibrant, oozing with Andalusian charm.

Sixteen scenic beaches, fascinating museums, a wide variety of restaurants, bars, bodegas, and vast shopping options have all contributed to this previously underrated city finding its own place in the sun.

A hotbed of art and culture

It’s only fitting that the city which gave the world one of the most innovative and influential artists is a hotbed of art and culture. With over 30 museums and a wealth of art galleries, Málaga is Andalusia’s leading cultural hub and a culture vulture’s dream. Art lovers can spend hours inside interesting museums and galleries that are by no means limited to showcasing the works of Picasso.

Historical landscapes

While Málaga, which was founded in the 8th century BC, has transformed itself into an attractive tourist destination, it still proudly acknowledges its multi-layered past. Exploring its paved streets, you can still see centuries old castles and ancient Arabic fortresses that are representative of different periods in the city’s history.

Explore the ruins of the Alcazaba, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortress palaces in Spain and Málaga’s most important landmark. Make sure to also check out the Roman Amphitheater at Calle Alcazabilla 8, the oldest monument in Málaga City (from 1st century BC), the Roman theatre, and the Gibralfaro Castle, once considered the most impregnable fortress on the Iberian Peninsula.

Natural landscapes

Not too far from its historical monuments, Mediterranean beaches, and palm-lined boulevards, are wildlife and nature. Málaga’s suburbs quickly make way to wooded hills and mountains, providing some wonderful hiking opportunities.

Animal lovers can relish the sights of foxes, eagles, wild boars, badgers, goshawks, and buzzards north of the city in the Montes de Malaga Natural Park.

Student life in Málaga

Glorious sunny weather, a great seaside location, and fascinating culture are hallmarks of this great student city.

But student life in Málaga goes well beyond scenic beaches, beautiful natural landscapes, and fascinating art. It also has exciting nightlife where you can find a lot of bars, restaurants, pubs, and nightclubs.

Nightlife

The city centre gets busy every night of the week. From house music clubs to traditional jazz bars, there are plenty of nightlife spots in Málaga. South of La Malagueta, El Palo, and Pedregalejo, you can find a lot of trendy and cool hotspots for young people.

Eager revellers will also be happy to know that drinks are extremely affordable in Málaga. For around €1.50, you can get your night off to a great start with a cerveza (beer) or Tinto de Verano (a Spanish cocktail).

Where to study in Málaga?

Founded in 1972, the University of Málaga (Universidad de Málaga, UMA) is a young, growing university that has made quality teaching, cutting-edge research, and knowledge transfer its hallmarks.

Despite not being a very old university, UMA has grown rapidly to become one of the largest universities in Spain. It offers 65 degree courses and 6 double degrees, over 20 doctoral programmes, 64 master’s degrees, and 100 courses to its more than 35,000 students throughout the academic year.

The vast majority of the UMA’s teaching is organised within 18 centres from 81 departments across two campuses.

The El Ejido Campus, where it all began, remains the centre for economics, architecture, and fine arts. But the bulk of UMA’s current activity and its expansion is in the west of the city, on the suburban Teatinos campus. The institution also has satellite centres at Ronda and Antequera.
